The programme is built on three pillars.
Semesters 1–2
The basics
In the programme's first few semesters, you'll focus on the fundamentals of business administration, including marketing, management, and accounting – always with an emphasis on how these apply to the tourism industry. You will also build a strong foundation for understanding the concepts and geographies of global tourism dynamics. In the Communication Mastery I module, we help you develop both your intercultural communication skills and your academic writing abilities.
In your second semester, sustainability becomes a key focus – not only in a dedicated module but as a theme woven throughout the entire degree programme. You'll explore consumer behaviour and psychology, discovering how qualitative research can be used to uncover deeper motivations, attitudes, and experiences behind people’s choices. At the same time, you'll strengthen your communication skills – from confident presentations to essential soft skills – and gain a solid understanding of economics, learning how to make informed business decisions based on data.
Semesters 3–4
Bridging theory and practice: Practical training and time abroad
All courses have a strong practical focus. Most of the lecturers come directly from the tourism industry and use real-world examples to illustrate course content.
In your third semester, you'll dive into the legal environment shaping the tourism industry, gaining essential knowledge to navigate complex regulations confidently. You'll also apply your learning in practical ways through modules on tourism project and event management, exploring how to design and deliver impactful experiences. Digital transformation and AI in tourism will open your eyes to cutting-edge technologies revolutionizing the sector, while the mobility and intermediaries module helps you understand the global travel ecosystem and its key players. At the same time, Communication Mastery continues in your chosen language, with a strong focus on business communication, negotiation skills, group dynamics, and job application strategies — preparing you to succeed both in your studies and your future career.
In semester 3 you have the option of taking a semester abroad at one of our 200+ partner universities, while in semester 4 you will work at a company of your choice abroad for at least 22 weeks. This will give you the opportunity to apply your theoretical knowledge in a professional setting. And when looking for a suitable internship provider, you can draw on our large, global company database. So you can look forward to gaining experience abroad!
Semesters 5 & 6
Advanced courses
In the final two semesters, you will deepen your expertise and explore advanced topics shaping the future of tourism.
Semester 5 offers a strong mix of core and elective subjects. You will enhance your business skills through courses such as Finance, Investment and Mathematics and Risk and Crisis Management, while gaining industry-specific insights in Digital Tourism and Marketing and Cultural and Culinary Tourism. You can also specialise by choosing between Sustainable Hospitality Management or Sustainable Destination Management, allowing you to focus on an area that aligns with your career goals.
In Semester 6, the emphasis shifts to innovation and leadership. You will study Business Models and Business Planning and Innovation and Experience Design, complemented by a choice of electives such as Wellness Tourism, Congress and Conference Management or Sports and Adventure Tourism. You will also take part in the Future Lab and Personal Development, designed to enhance your professional skills and entrepreneurial mindset.
Throughout your final year, you will work on your Bachelor Thesis across two seminars, building towards the Bachelor Exam — which also serves as your final exam. This milestone is your chance to bring together everything you’ve learned, showcase your expertise, and leave your mark on the tourism sector with fresh, research-based perspectives. It’s the perfect springboard for launching your career or continuing your academic journey.
Application and admission
Is our degree programme just what you’re looking for? Here are your next steps!
We’ve put together all the relevant information for you.
What are the admission requirements for bachelor programmes?
To qualify for admission to a university of applied sciences bachelor degree programme, you must have an Austrian school-leaving certificate or an equivalent qualification.
Do you have a school-leaving certificate issued outside Austria?
We’ll check to make sure it’s equivalent to an Austrian certificate in accordance with section 4 of the University of Applied Sciences Studies Act (FHG) when you’ve sent us all the relevant documentation via our online application tool. If it is not an equivalent, you’ll receive information on the supplementary examinations you’ll need to pass. In a nutshell, you will have the option of completing a summer school and the necessary supplementary examinations at IMC Krems or look for an external provider. In that case, you might consider our cooperation partner, the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria: It offers a one-year International Foundation Programme which provides you with all the necessary qualifications you need in order to start your studies in Krems.
What proof of your language skills is required for our English-language bachelor degree programme?
We’ll assess your English language proficiency at your interview, so there is no need to provide additional evidence of your English skills.
Important
Do you still need to complete your military or alternative service? If you’re a male Austrian citizen, we strongly recommend completing your compulsory national service before beginning your studies. This will allow you to finish your degree with no interruptions and start your career without delay afterwards.
We would like to get to know you as a person
As part of the online application you will have to write a statement of motivation and a short essay on a topic relevant to the degree programme. Predefined questions about your motivations as well as the requirements and topics for your essay can be found in the online application. You choose one of the suggested topics, conduct research to broaden your knowledge, deal with the issues and bring your own point of view to the essay. Your answers are to be entered in the fields provided.
Your statement of motivation and your essay form the basis for your application interview. Every applicant has an opportunity to introduce themselves in a face-to-face discussion, usually with the degree programme director. In addition to the personal introduction and your motivation to study, the applicant and the interviewer discuss the topic selected and the arguments used in the essay, as well as the topic’s relevance for the degree programme.
The application interview is held in the language of instruction of the degree programme and can take place either online via Microsoft Teams or in presence.
After the application interview, your statement of motivation, the essay and your performance throughout the interview are assessed on the basis of the content-related remarks, the manner in which they express themselves and the arguments used.
What are the dates for the interview?
There are usually a selection of dates to choose from, with quotas allocated for each date. You can select a date and time slot during the online registration process. We therefore recommend that you complete your application in good time so that you can benefit from the full selection of dates.
Once you have successfully completed your online application, it will be checked for completeness and accuracy. As soon as this process is finished, we will inform you via email and confirm your admission date.
