An Austria-wide lighthouse project was officially opened with a festive ceremony at Göttweig Benedictine Abbey on 18 June 2025: Göttweig Healing Forest – the first certified healing forest in Austria. The innovative cooperation project between IMC University of Applied Sciences Krems and Göttweig Benedictine Abbey creates a unique offer for health promotion, prevention and therapy on approximately 53 hectares – scientifically sound, spiritually anchored and accessible for all generations.

Austria’s first certified healing forest opened in Göttweig

“Göttweig Healing Forest impressively demonstrates what can be achieved when science, the church, the community and the state work together. This project combines nature, health and innovation – and not only strengthens our healthcare system but also improves the quality of life and tourist attractiveness of the region,” said Provincial Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner in her opening speech.
Scientific basis for lasting effects
Göttweig Healing Forest is located on Eichberg hill in the market town of Paudorf. Covering around 53 hectares, the trail leads through a diverse forest landscape – with impressive 145-year-old mammoth trees at its centre. The natural design of the site and its integration into the existing ecosystem create ideal conditions for exercise, mindfulness and relaxation. Stations with targeted mobility and coordination as well as relaxation exercises have been set up. The thoughtfully designed areas invite visitors to exercise and relax. Biblical and Christian inspiration also encourages visitors to recharge their batteries – all this in a particularly healthy forest with excellent air quality. Even a short stay in the forest has been proven to reduce stress hormones, stabilise circulation and strengthen the immune system. Studies show that regular visits to natural forest areas can have a lasting positive effect on mental health.
The project development is based on comprehensive scientific research. Together with experts, air purity, biodiversity, climatic conditions and psychosocial effects were comprehensively surveyed and analysed. This resulted in a detailed utilisation concept that not only outlines therapeutic potential but also enables low-threshold access for the population. In addition to health-promoting activities, the focus is on forest therapy: in Göttweig Healing Forest, the forest is used specifically for therapy and the treatment of chronic illnesses, psychosomatic disorders, exhaustion and rehabilitation.
Comments on the project: research, impact and vision
“The project is a beacon – not just for Lower Austria, but for the whole of Austria. It helps people develop resilience, reduce stress and promote health at all levels through contact with nature,” explained Heinz Boyer, Chairman of the IMC Supervisory Board and project initiator.
“The Healing Forest is more than just a therapeutic place – it invites people to discover and experience the beneficial connection to nature. Our concept combines health promotion with forest therapy elements and makes the forest accessible as a special place to live and experience,” said Susanne Bauer, IMC project manager for Göttweig Healing Forest.
Cooperation with Göttweig Benedictine Abbey as the foundation of the project
A central element of the concept is the close cooperation with Göttweig Benedictine Abbey. In addition to forestry expertise, a spiritual dimension enriches the project beyond its purely health-related effects. Abbot Patrick Schöder regards the forest as a place of contemplation and strength: “With the Healing Forest, we are building a bridge between the spiritual power of nature and the human need for inner balance. For us, the forest is a place of silence, of reconnection with the essential – here, healing can be experienced in a comprehensive sense.”
The forestry work was carried out with great care. Around one per cent of the total forest area of the monastery was specifically designated as a healing forest and is subject to particularly natural, sustainable management. At a time when awareness of nature and health is growing rapidly, the healing forest is also a response to new social needs. The monastery no longer views the forest as merely an economic asset, but as an active contribution to a healthy and sustainable society.
Certified according to international standards
Göttweig Healing Forest is the first healing forest in Austria to receive a seal of approval. Official certification by the international healing forest certification body BioCon Valley GmbH, based in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, underscores the high quality of the project. Among other things, the suitability of the forest area, medical and therapeutic potential, infrastructure and ecological sustainability were examined.
The project, which is supported by the LEADER region Donau NÖ, is a successful example of regional development in action and the potential of interdisciplinary cooperation.
