Sustainability Management: A degree programme with real impact

Michael Hollaus’ experience in Sustainability Management at IMC Krems

Before starting his studies, Michael spent a long time thinking about whether studying was the right decision. As he is almost 30, this step required careful consideration. Looking back, he is glad that he decided to start studying. Today, this decision shapes how he approaches learning and personal development.

The impact of sustainability and climate change

Michael’s interest in sustainability developed through self study. He read articles, explored studies and watched videos. Through this, he realised how strongly humanity affects climate change. He had always believed that people should take better care of the Earth’s resources. What surprised him was the true scale of human impact.

“I realised that humanity has a much bigger impact on climate change than I had ever expected.”

This realisation strengthened his belief that society needs to live with nature instead of against it. For Michael, sustainability is closely linked to the economy. Real change also requires economic responsibility.

Choosing Sustainability Management as a field of study

Michael decided to study Sustainability Management to better understand economic systems. He wanted to learn how sustainability can be integrated into business and decision making. The programme gives him insights into how organisations can act more responsibly.

Through his studies, he learns how sustainability can become part of everyday practice.

Finding the right study environment at IMC Krems

From the beginning, a part-time study option was essential. Michael wanted to continue working alongside his studies. Personal interaction with lecturers and practical relevance were equally important to him.

At IMC Krems, these expectations were met. The exchange with lecturers and fellow students is close and supportive. The strong practical focus helps connect theory with real-world challenges.

Experiencing an international learning atmosphere

One of the biggest surprises for Michael was the international character of the programme. More than half of the students in his year come from outside Austria. Classmates are from Iceland, Hungary and Moldova for instance and, therefore, bring different perspectives into discussions.

“Every country has its own challenges, which means each one needs its own path towards sustainability.”

This exchange broadened his view on sustainability. It showed him that solutions must always consider local contexts.

Balancing studies and personal life

Outside his studies, Michael enjoys spending time with friends and family. Being outdoors is important to him. Hiking and skiing help him relax and recharge.

Travelling is another passion of his. Discovering new places and meeting people from different cultures continues to inspire him.

Advice for future students

Michael knows that deciding to study can come with doubts. His own experience showed him that studying takes commitment. At the same time, it is an investment in yourself.

In a short time, students gain knowledge and develop new skills. They also broaden their horizons. His advice is to trust your motivation, seek information and have the courage to take the next step.
