Studying with Impact: Shaping Chemistry, Driving Innovation

Students in the chemistry lab: Cutting-edge equipment and small group sizes ensure hands-on training at IMC Krems.

With the motto "All life is chemistry", IMC University of Applied Sciences Krems underlines a fundamental truth: chemistry is everywhere – from the development of new medicines to the production of sustainable materials. In the English-taught Bachelor’s degree programme Chemistry, students systematically acquire the fundamentals of chemistry and apply their knowledge directly in laboratory experiments. Through interdisciplinary projects and the use of modern analytical systems, they develop a holistic understanding of chemical processes – and learn to find solutions to pressing issues such as environmental protection, recycling, and pharmaceutical development. This degree also provides an excellent foundation for a career in biotechnology and is a compelling option for applicants with a keen interest in the life sciences.

The programme’s practical orientation is reflected in small class sizes and close personal support. This is made possible by our newly equipped laboratories, where students have the opportunity to work independently with all instruments. Lecturers bring not only academic expertise but also many years of experience from industry and research. Head of Institute Prof. (FH) Priv.-Doz. Dr Uwe Rinner emphasises:
"With the Chemistry programme, we are training exactly the kind of specialists the chemical industry needs today and in the future – practice-oriented, well-connected, and forward-thinking."

Why Study Chemistry at IMC Krems?

Excellent career prospects: The Bachelor's degree programme is precisely aligned with the needs of the chemical industry. Graduates possess in-depth knowledge across all areas of modern chemistry – an ideal springboard for careers in pharmaceuticals, materials science, environmental technology, and biotechnology.

Cutting-edge content and industry insights: From day one, digital tools, data analysis, and computer-based simulations play a central role. Guest lecturers from the business world offer first-hand insights, while partnerships with companies enable students to gain valuable practical experience throughout their studies.

Extensive laboratory experience: Hands-on lab work is at the heart of the programme.
"We place a strong emphasis on the synthetic preparation of compounds in direct combination with modern analytical methods, chemical databases, and software tools," says Rinner. Students learn to plan, conduct, and analyse experiments independently – ideal preparation for demanding roles in research and development.

Strong International Focus

The entire programme is taught in English, preparing students for international careers and enabling them to become part of a global science and industry network. Over 70% of students complete a work placement abroad, significantly enhancing their intercultural skills and global job prospects.

Research Excellence in Focus: Nanomotors and Sustainability

Internationally renowned research is integrated directly into the study programme – for example through Prof. (FH) Priv.-Doz. Dr Yolanda Salinas Soler, who joined the IMC Krems team in 2025. Her research spans biodegradable polymers, nanomedicine, and motorised nanoparticles – known as nanomotors. These tiny, mobile particles are capable of delivering drugs directly to tumour cells, where they act precisely and effectively – without harming surrounding tissue.
At the same time, she explores environmentally friendly nanotechnologies designed to remove pollutants in a targeted manner and biodegrade after use. This fusion of high-end technology and environmental responsibility is a prime example of the research-driven orientation at IMC Krems.
"Our vision is to create chemical innovations that are both effective and sustainable – for the health of people and the planet," says Yolanda Salinas Soler.
The close link between teaching and research is clearly evident in the way international expertise is integrated into everyday student life at IMC Krems.
