Putting skills to the test: How degree programmes prepare students for real-world challenges

Xhevahire Sinani and Patrycja Kruszewska gained real international experience in Chile

Xhevahire and Patrycja are in their 3rd semester of the International Business and Economic Diplomacy master degree programme at IMC Krems. One of the highlights of their studies was taking part in the international case competition “Moving the Cities 2025” in Santiago de Chile, where student teams develop innovative and sustainable solutions for future urban challenges. Their team achieved 2nd place in the competition.

“Participating in an international competition like this was a particularly valuable experience for us,” they agree.

How the journey began

The journey started in the 2nd semester with an internal competition at IMC Krems. Students worked in teams of 4 and developed a business model, which they pitched in front of a jury.

Together with 2 fellow students, Xhevahire and Patrycja won the competition. This success meant they were selected to represent IMC Krems internationally and travel to Chile for the case competition.
“When we realised that we would be representing IMC Krems in Chile, it felt like a huge opportunity.”

Facing an international challenge in Chile

In Santiago de Chile, they joined the competition together with students from universities in Chile, Germany, Brazil and the USA. New international teams were formed, bringing together different perspectives and ways of working.

Each team worked on a challenge related to UN Sustainable Development Goal 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production. Within just 5 days, they had to develop a concept and present it. The time pressure was high, and collaboration across cultures was essential.

The concept they developed

Xhevahire and Patrycja were part of the team that developed a concept for sustainable disaster kits. These kits were designed for emergencies such as earthquakes or floods and focused on responsible production and efficient use of resources.

Achieving second place meant a great deal to them, especially given the strong international competition and the limited time available.

“This experience showed us what can be achieved when people from different backgrounds work together.”

What they took away from the experience

One of the biggest highlights was working in an international team. Despite the short time, the group quickly came together and worked efficiently and creatively.

Adapting to new people, a new country and a complex task was challenging. At the same time, it showed how well their degree programme prepares students for real international settings. Business knowledge, communication skills and diplomacy all played an important role.

Looking ahead

The experience confirmed their interest in international careers. It also showed how valuable hands-on experience is alongside academic learning.

Studying at IMC Krems has given Xhevahire and Patrycja opportunities to grow, step out of their comfort zone and gain real-world experience. They are proud to have represented IMC Krems on an international level.
