AI between innovation and responsibility

Artificial intelligence is transforming business, society and our everyday lives at a rapid pace. At the same time, the question of how this technology can be designed responsibly and sustainably is becoming increasingly important. Prof. (FH) Dr Rubén Ruiz Torrubiano, Head of the Master’s degree programme Engineering Responsible AI Systems at IMC Krems, addresses precisely these challenges in his lecture Sustainable Development of Artificial Intelligence: The Way Ahead, presented as part of the Austria-wide Lectures for Future (L4F) lecture series.

Sustainable AI and new technological approaches

The lecture focuses on the sustainability challenges associated with artificial intelligence, particularly in the context of the climate crisis. In addition to social and technological solutions, Prof. Ruiz Torrubiano highlights the potential of neurosymbolic (hybrid) AI. This approach combines data-driven methods with symbolic knowledge and is regarded as a promising pathway for developing powerful, transparent and sustainable AI systems. The aim is to create AI systems that are more robust and less data-intensive, thereby reducing the consumption of resources such as electricity and water while also increasing trustworthiness.

By participating in the Lectures for Future, IMC Krems is sending a clear signal in favour of combining technological innovation with sustainable development. Established at Austrian higher education institutions since 2019, the lecture series brings together researchers, students and the wider public and promotes interdisciplinary dialogue on the climate crisis and sustainability.
