International Research into Forests and Health at IMC Krems

The 8th Congress of the International Society of Forest Therapy brought experts together at IMC Krems from 13 to 15 October 2026.

How can forests contribute to human health, and how can scientific findings be applied in prevention, therapy and healthcare? These were the key questions explored at the 8th International Congress of the International Society of Forest Therapy (ISFT), held at IMC Krems from 13 to 15 October 2026. Researchers, medical professionals, psychologists, therapists and experts from healthcare, forestry, tourism, education and politics came together to discuss the latest research findings and explore opportunities to translate nature-based health approaches into practical applications.

The congress also held particular historical significance for Krems: the International Society of Forest Therapy was founded here by Heinz Boyer and Horst Klinkmann. By returning to its place of origin, Krems once again became a focal point for international scientific exchange on forests and health.

Bridging Science and Societal Relevance

The scientific programme covered a broad range of topics, from forest therapy for children and young people and its relevance to mental health to clinical and therapeutic approaches, scientific evidence, quality assurance and implementation within healthcare and care systems. The potential of forest therapy for education, tourism and regional development was also explored. International keynote speeches, expert presentations and interdisciplinary discussions linked scientific findings with potential practical applications.

“Forests and health bring together scientific, societal and regional issues. This presents a major opportunity, as research can provide valuable impetus for healthcare, prevention, tourism and regional development. We are particularly pleased that this international exchange is taking place in Krems, where international expertise and strong regional roots come together to create opportunities for new perspectives,” says Ulrike Prommer, Managing Director of IMC Krems.

For IMC Krems, fostering dialogue between research and practice is also a key priority. “The ISFT Congress brings international research expertise to Krems and creates opportunities to exchange knowledge on the latest scientific findings and their practical application. The fact that experts from around the world are gathering here underlines the importance of our location as a centre for knowledge exchange and innovation. For IMC Krems, it is particularly important not only to raise the visibility of research but also to actively promote dialogue between science and practice,” says Udo Brändle, Managing Director of IMC Krems.

The congress concluded with an excursion to the "Healing Forest Göttweig, developed as a joint project by IMC Krems and Göttweig Abbey. The next ISFT Congress will take place in South Korea in 2027, marking the first time the event will be held in an Asian country. This follows a cooperation agreement between the ISFT and the World Forum on Forest Therapy, which was formally signed during a ceremony at Göttweig Abbey.
