Between Hosting and Living – Rethinking sustainable destination planning

Lectures for Future is an interdisciplinary lecture series that has been offered at various Austrian universities since the winter semester of 2019. Destinations today face the challenge of offering memorable guest experiences while safeguarding a sustainable future for their communities. This is especially pressing in rural and nature-based regions where climate change is transforming the very landscapes tourism relies on. A shift towards regenerative and de-growth approaches signals new thinking in tourism development.
In her lecture, Dr. Alice Wanner will show why sustainability in tourism must extend beyond environmental issues to include social well-being and resilience, and how innovative, forward-looking planning can help destinations create thriving, sustainable communities for residents and visitors alike.
